Brief Descriptions of the Guidelines' Scope

 

Abrasive Blasting

This Guideline covers the requirements associated with abrasive blasting, including work permits, special precautions, blasting enclosures, ventilation requirements, the control of static electricity, requirements for carrying out blasting work, personal protective equipment to be used, health assessment and surveillance of personnel involved in abrasive blasting work, management of abrasive blasting wastes and notifications to the authorities.

Air Pollution and Odors

This guideline covers the requirements associated with environmental air quality and odors, including dust, smoke and other substances which constitute visual pollution.  It applies to all instances where the air quality outside the site boundaries is affected by the Company's operations (including transport operations) and may lead to complaints, legal claims or action by statutory authorities.

Air Quality and Ventilation 

This Guideline covers the requirements associated with air quality in the workplace and the provision of exhaust ventilation where required.  It covers the identification of poor air quality; the design, installation, inspection and maintenance of exhaust ventilation equipment and the control of Legionnaires’ disease.

For air quality issues which relate to areas outside the workplace (i.e. environmental air pollution and odors) refer ES&H Guideline ESH-US-G-070.

For outdoor ambient dust control, particularly associated with excavation and earth works, refer ES&H Guideline ESH-US-G-043.

Areas with Flammable Gases and Dusts

This Guideline covers the requirements associated with the classification and delineation of hazardous areas and the control of sources of ignition in these areas.  This includes the use of electrical equipment and the control of miscellaneous ignition sources such as lighters, matches and electronic equipment.

This Guideline covers the requirements associated with the management of all operations with the aim of preventing the spread of infectious, communicable diseases, including AIDS, hepatitis, SARS and others.

Confined or Enclosed Spaces
This Guideline covers the requirements associated with the entry into, and performance of work in, confined spaces such as tanks, vessels, pits, ditches, pipes, ducts, sewers, drains, tunnels, etc.  The Guideline addresses the assessment of hazards, authorization for entry, preparation for entry, entry into the confined space, stand‑by person's duties, work in the confined space (including hot work), rescue and first-aid and the closure of confined spaces.

This Guideline covers the requirements associated with the protection of the ecosystem within and adjacent to the site, which may be adversely affected by the Company's operations.  This includes an ecosystem survey, a process of community consultation and a flora and fauna conservation program.

This Guideline covers the requirements associated with the isolation of equipment from sources of electricity prior to any work on electrical equipment, including equipment which may emit RF (Radio-Frequency) radiation, or electrically-driven machinery.  It includes the means for effective isolation, padlocking, tagging, testing and re-connection.

Greenhouse Effect and Ozone Layer
This Guideline covers the requirements associated with the control of the use and emission of greenhouse gases (which are considered to promote the greenhouse effect) and ozone depleting substances (such as commercial chlorofluorocarbons).  This includes activities such as foam manufacture, solvents and cleaning agents, fixed Halon flooding systems (use and testing), portable Halon fire extinguishers (e.g. BCF type), refrigeration and air conditioning, and aerosols (propellants).
